Jean Murge

France

A former student of the Tourcoing School of Fine Arts and of the French Higher School of Decorative Arts (ENSAD) in Paris, Jean Murgue sculpts metal and creates highly recognisable shapes that nonetheless retain a mysterious presence in space: successions of anonymous houses, reliquary trees, suspended boats, birds in wait…

In his sculptures and his photography, elements do not produce a clear narrative: hieratic silhouettes float in an undefined space, trees host some mysterious ritual. The artist seems to organise, in a world in expectation, the meeting of human and nature. Something like a ceremony seems to be involved, even an initiation.
